The safe distance for different types of vehicles varies up to 85 meters!

A known rule of at least two-second safety clearance is generally applicable to passenger cars that perform best in slowing down. Nevertheless, it is not to be remembered how safe distance is defined by Act No. 361/2000 Coll., On Road Traffic. "The driver of a vehicle traveling behind another vehicle must leave a sufficient safety margin behind it in order to avoid collision in the event of a sudden deceleration or sudden stop of the vehicle being driven before it."

However, for other types of motor vehicles, the situation is somewhat more complicated. Above all, drivers of vehicles over 3,500 kg would have to extend the amount of time, because not only the total weight of the motor vehicle but also the cargo they carry should be taken into account. In this context, § 19 of Act No. 361/2000 Coll., On Road Traffic on Motor Vehicles above 3 500 kg, imposes the following duty: "Driver of a motor vehicle with a maximum permissible weight exceeding 3 500 kg, a combination of vehicles whose total length exceeds 10 m, and a special vehicle2) must keep outside the community behind the vehicle ahead of him so that the passing vehicle can safely be placed in front of him; it does not apply if it prepares for overtaking, overtaking and parallel driving. "

Also, motorcyclists should not forget the basic fact that their instant braking capability is greatly limited by the one-piece construction of the vehicle, which can result in shear and subsequent fall during a sharp braking. Therefore, it is good to choose a time gap that will ideally allow bikers to bracket so-called dosing. A comprehensive idea of minimum safe distances for different types of motor vehicles can be found in the enclosed table and picture.

Conditions in road traffic are constantly changing, the current situation before our vehicle must be continually evaluated while driving and possibly changing the safe distance. When assessing the current situation, drivers should also take into account the following aspects: age and technical condition of the vehicle (brake system and tire condition, tire pressures), tire grip on the road surface, reaction time. Drivers of over 3500kg and air braking systems must anticipate braking delays and slower braking of the braking system, up to three times longer compared to a passenger car. Compared to a passenger car, the truck slows down by as much as 25%, the bus is about 15% worse, if it does not overload the passenger. "Full" braking would be very risky given the possible serious injury to passengers.

WARNING: There is a big danger when the driver of the car during the overtaking is in front of the truck or truck. The inertia force, forcing about forty tons of weight, is now huge and the immediate braking effect is limited.
