Taj Mahal is one of the most important and influential personalities of blues music in the 20th century. Taj Mahal was born Henry ST. Claire Fredericks in Harlem in 1942. He grew up in Massachusetts in a musical family. His father was a jazz pianist and composer, his mother sang in a gospel choir, and soon began himself to sing and play several instruments. After graduation, he moved to Los Angeles, where he formed the band Rising Sons with guitarist Ry Cooder. They opened a number of important musicians and young Taj is thus familiar with many blues legends.
